Enterocolitis of the Rabbit
The enterocolitis is an animal disease that often afflicts rabbits. It is an inflammation of the thin and large intestines, which lasts 2-5 days.
The disease is mainly caused by highly pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli (less frequently by Lawsonia Intracellularis). As the enterocolitis is highly infectious, it can spread in stocks in a diseased state.
Affected animals set the feed intake and show partially apathetic, undisturbed "in-stall-sitting".
Thin pulpy diarrhea with a slimy admixture of a jelly-like secretion with foul odor is observed in the early stages. Later, the Kotabsatz can be suspended and an inflation of the abdominal cavity may occur.
The diagnosis is based on the clinical picture and a bacterial examination of the Kots.
